BIE ranked top interim executive provider for fifth consecutive year
16th January 2007

Interim Executive Management provider BIE Interim Executive has again been independently ranked as the top company by market share in its sector, for the fifth consecutive year, by Executive Grapevine International Ltd.

Managing Director of BIE, Martin Wood, a pioneer of this management resource since he founded PA Consulting Group’s interim management unit in 1990, has assembled a management team at BIE which has a total of 55 years experience in this specialist sector.

“During our time in this business we have acquired an unrivalled in-depth knowledge of the UK’s top interim executives, selected from more than 25,000 face to face interviews with potential candidates, and having experience of working with proven interims on thousands of successful assignments globally”, says Wood.

“Successful career interim executives are at a premium. At the moment I would estimate that their number just touches 1,200. We would like to think that we have an in-depth working knowledge of the vast majority of these, together with the proven ability to identify new interim talent and launch it on a new career”, concludes Wood.

The Executive Grapevine article includes comments from a number of chief executives who agree on the points that the qualities and experience of the provider are paramount in achieving the right appointment – and that the resource needs to be in place quickly, within days, not weeks. BIE/MORI’s 2006 survey further confirmed that CEO’s are increasingly looking to specialist providers to source their Interims. 46% would use a specialist provider compared with 37% the previous year.

Interim providers need to understand the character of the client’s business and have a list of quality people that they can draw upon to have them in place, often within a week.

Wood also makes the point that the good interims will be planning their exit strategy very soon after they are in place. “It is a mistake to allow Interim Executives to “go native”, claims Wood. “A key task of any interim executive’s assignment will be to plan the exit to ensure that a more sound structure is left behind ( by choosing and grooming a successor ) or that a clean “no problems” ending ( such as a closure of a part of the business or a sale ) is achieved”.

Methodology:

The Executive Grapevine survey confined itself to interim management assignments as defined by the Interim Management Association. Namely that at least 80% of assignments over the previous twelve months were charged at a rate expected for a senior executive i.e. about £500 per day inclusive of the fee providers fee but excluding Vat. Any firm not operating at this level was excluded. All participants were asked to provide ratified figures of their net fee income for Interim Management Revenues only for the 12 month period: July 05 to June 06.
