MORI POLL SHOWS BRITISH FIRMS ENTERING PERIOD OF CHANGE
- over half of all larger firms planning major change/restructuring in next year

1 July 2002

New research conducted by MORI on behalf of BIE, the UK’s leading specialist provider of senior level interim executives, shows that a majority (51%) of larger firms in Britain (those with turnovers above £20 million) are planning major change or restructuring programmes in the next year.

The survey also revealed relative levels of confidence with 30% likely to undertake a growth programme in the next 12 months and 24% an acquisition. None of those surveyed forecast a closure or sell-off in the coming year.

BIE undertook the research because of the increased use by businesses of senior interim executives to manage change within their organisations. Martin Wood, BIE Managing Director, says: “This research shows how much change is now taking place in British business, and the pressing need for experienced managers who can come in and offer instant advice and delivery.”

Among larger firms there are high levels of confidence in the change management ability of interim executives sourced through a professional supplier, with 91% of larger firms questioned saying they had a fair amount or a great deal of confidence in these interims being able to manage a change programme successfully. These interims fared better in the survey with larger firms than both internal resources (73%) and management consultants (68%).

Martin Wood continues: “Senior interim executives, who can provide incisive advice and deliver business transforming results within a short period of time are a rare breed. The only way for organisations planning a change programme or transition to ensure they get the quality interim support they need is to use a specialist interim management provider. To go anywhere else for interims risks missing the opportunity to maximise the use of this still under-utilised resource.”

The research also highlighted the frequency with which individuals now change at senior management level. Nearly 30% of larger firms have experienced a senior-level departure in the last six months, and of the vacancies created by these departures, 81% remain unfilled. The most precarious senior role at the moment appears to be Sales Director, accounting for 80% of these recent departures, perhaps reflecting the switch in focus to trying to improve the top-line having stripped as much cost as possible out of the business.

Marketing Directors, traditionally seen perhaps as one of the first positions to come under threat, demonstrated a certain degree of stickability, with only 2% of recent departures occupying this role. Of all these recent departures, 84% were a planned part of restructuring the business, again reflecting the pace of change in big business in the UK.
