1.3. The evolving Interim market

Respondents have noticed a shift in the interim market over the last few years. Where previously, there was a ‘for sub-standard people’ stigma attached to interim work, in recent years, interim work has become a career choice for talented executives because of the lifestyle and work-life balance it affords. This has possibly been spurred on by wider changes such as the movement away from final salary pensions and from the attraction of cradle-to-grave jobs. For an increasing number of people, the interim career route is seen as providing an alternative to the rat race, giving them more control of their destiny.

As a result, respondents believe interims are now better, more diverse and from a wider age range.

“The better ones have been doing it for several years and that’s all they want – nine months on, three months off... and it works and they are very good and always in demand, and the not-so-good ones seem to struggle.”
