Mori HR Directors' Dinner Discussion on Interim Management

3.2. Getting on the radar

As previously noted, they have relationship-based approaches towards sourcing for interims, and so establishing and developing a relationship – and ultimately, a partnership – with this audience is key. Respondents acknowledge that the interim market is a competitive one and it is difficult for new players to break into the circle.

“Unless it is somebody I have used and notably had a success with, they’ll disappear off the radar”.

Nonetheless, the first step towards achieving this is an investment in understanding the organisation’s needs and culture, and understanding how the interim provider can help the organisation, not necessarily immediately, but in the longer term.

“Understanding me, understanding the organisation, and timely intervention. Not the fortnightly phone calls ‘Have you got any vacancies?’. It is investment up front in terms of ‘Do I understand this organisation’s needs and culture?’ and that is how they create the relationship which will make me want to go and seek business from them.”

“With the companies that I do business with, very often it is that relationship-type approach: ‘How may we help you?’, ‘How can we really understand what your business needs might be, even if that right now means no business?’. I think the investment in understanding the needs, understanding how the organisation might tick, understanding how they might help you at some point in the future, getting the relationship established… Very often it works over a cup of coffee for me, so take me out of the office, off the phone into an environment, the Starbucks-type environment, where for 10 minutes, get it focused but not necessarily expecting immediate business out of it, that is where I think it is a good investment.”

Also, an endorsement from their peers can be quite influential. Having heard one respondent speak highly about BIE, another respondent commented: “I think an endorsement like that for me carries much more weight for me than 10 phone calls, frankly.”
